Fake Camo Helmet ID Tips
Identifying fake camouflaged helmets can be a very, very tricky thing to do! I will attempt to give you some "tips" to do so but, there is no sure way to tell! I know many people like to hear "exact" reasons why something is not original. Again, that is not easy with a fake camo paint that is well done. After you see enough "original" helmets some things become "usually" noticeable. Firstly, they need to use a paint that was used during the period. When you see enough camo helmets you do start to notice differences in the sheen, the feel, the color and texture of the paint that was used during the period. I do like to see a natural patina on the paint which forms over time. Depending on storage, you very well may find red rust on a helmet. However, you want to see more black or inactive rust where the base metal shows through. If every spot of metal exposed has new rust, that is exactly what it is "new". Looking at all original helmets we do start to notice natural age and wear. Helmets that have been artificially aged and worn tend to look artificially aged and worn. There are several people "faking" helmets out there and other people who want to restore damaged helmets. To restore or help preserve a historical artifact is a honorable quality in my mind although it has a gray area. If someone sells a restored piece they really need to disclose what has been done. The helmet I have included pictures of, thank God! Was made by a man who makes them honestly. I am sure other people buy them and stick a liner in it and sell it as original! As I mentioned earlier the type of paint he uses does not look like the paint I would normally see on a camo helmet. I tell you though, having time to look it over and thinking about it I can see it as a fake. If I were at a show and had to make a decision quickly, it could fool me! This artist "rex" luckily marks his helmets with white paint inside. However, that would be easy for someone to remove. The way he simulates wear is very good and pretty convincing. In my 32 years of collecting I have learned one of the best ways to ID the fakes, is to know how they were made. Some people are happy to share what they do with you, others will not. One thing all agree on, is there is always someone better. There are other people out there who make their own paint, the same paint chemically as it was 70 years ago. So, the newer diagnostic tests they have to identify original helmets these days is limited in their use. Are they helpful? Yes! Can they confirm with 100% accuracy if a helmet has original paint on it? no! If they are analyzing elements in the paint for proportion and composition, that is all they can do. If modern paint is mixed with the same elements used in the originals it will not date the paint for you. Secondly, all it can really do to positively identify fake paint is notice components that did not exist during the WW2 period. Anything else is debatable! |

Italian "Normandy Style" Camo Helmet
I am normally into US and German helmets and some Japanese helmets. When I saw this ages ago I let it known that I would love to won it one day, I received that call not long ago. The shell has a green base paint with some yellow, brown and another shade of green. It looks way better in person then it does in the pictures, this is a very attractive helmet! The paint is well cracked or textured, hard to say if it was intentional or not. Whatever the case, it looks awesome! The chin strap is present as is most of the liner. The liner is a bit worn so take a look at the pics, the liner is also marked "59" for the size, so this is a large helmet. Just as a side note a friend had mentioned that there are some helmets similar tot his that were used by the Spanish. They can be identified because there was a device attached to the front of the helmet. They were riveted in place, this one never had such a device attached to it. |

Two Tone Camo Front Seem Swivel Bail US Helmet
I have had this helmet in my collection for several years. It has been one of my favorite helmets for some time but, times change. It is a rough sand finished helmet with a green and slightly darker green finish sprayed over it. Overall it is in really good condition but does show some age and wear with the paint being in the 90% range present. As mentioned earlier it is a front seem swivel bail helmet. The liner is mostly complete with semi worn parts that match the exterior of the helmet well. You never know which liners are originally to a helmet since they are so easily changed but I think this one is original to this helmet. It is nicely worn but not abused, I like it! |

M35 Wire Camo Helmet | ||||
This helmet is very well worn and shows a lot of age but..... it is also super cool! Honestly, it is hard to tell if it is a M35 with the paint and age that it shows. I say it is because I am pretty certain there are rivets holding the vents but between the age and heavy paint it is hard to say for sure. Secondly, it seems to have a single banded aluminum liner band which is only found on the earliest M35 helmets you see. Since I am there, the liner is pretty rough, look at the pics. The batch number is 183 and there is other information written in paint about the helmet on the rear apron. The exterior paint is pretty interesting as well. It appears to have a thick paint covered by a white paint for a winter campaign and then another thick dark paint again, this baby has been around! Lastly, we have a bailing wire over everything else, and it is as real as they come! If you ever wanted a wire helmet with no question of authenticity this is it! It does have some condition issues but it is still in collectable condition and super cool, I think you will be pleased! But, if you need "mint" items, this is not for you.

WWI M18 Camo Helmet | ||||
It is really rare to find a M18 helmet. M18s are distinguished by the chin strap bands being mounted to the metal liner band which was not done on the earlier style helmets, That is how this one is set up. The camo job is really exotic on this one consisting of the base color, a reddish color, green and yellow as well as another yellowish color. It is a swirl type of pattern which I almost never see, it look s awesome! It shows lots of age and wear but no real abuse, it does display very well. Two of the three liner pads are present, the third is gone to time. I can not tell the size since this helmet was re-issued but am guessing it is a size 64.

M35 Full Bail Wire Helmet
From what I have seen there is a small percentage of wire helmets that are “one looker” originals as this one is. There is another slightly larger percentage of wire helmets that are “one looker” fakes. Unfortunately, there is a large number of wire helmets that fall into a gray area that are hard to rule in either direction. One like this has a very nice aesthetic look and is as real as they come and will not be questioned by anyone. It came from a friend’s collection who has collected forever and seems to only buy from the best sources. Anyway, the shell is a Q66 and has an army paint job. The exterior shows some age and wear but just enough to be cool! The liner is fragile but as long as you don’t mistreat it, it should be fine. There is a partially broken tongue and another where the string has pulled through. I cannot make out the batch number since this is a re-issue helmet. |

M42 HELMET NO DECAL | ||||
This is a helmet that I can not tell you who made it or the batch number. Both are stamped on the rear skirt but of such poor quality of the stamp I can not read either only part that appears size 64. The exterior of the helmet retains over 85%+ of the original dark green textured paint. The photos show grease spots and streaking from either a previous cleaning attempt or just something that spilled on it. The Helmet would clean up very nicely with the proper materials. The helmet has all the scratches and a couple of rub spots that do not detract from it. The liner is only partially there someone cut most of it out leaving about 2" of leather around the band. I was told that the guy wore a baseball cap under it for riding his motorcycle. There is a rust spot under the front brim of about 1.5" long by 3/8", and some on the inside crown. What is neat is that there is the manufacture oval stamp in the crown of the helmet, rather unusual for a M42 helmet. One rivet is missing the inside circular piece that helps hold it in place. Condition very good

M40 RE-ISSUE NO DECAL HELMET
Just out of a local antique shop that I visit every week. This Q 64 batch no. DN479 has the dark green exterior paint that would rate about 70% there with all the usual dings and scratches. This helmet also has some of the obligatory white paint on it. The liner fingers are hard as water got to the liner and left surface rust on the inside crown, that can be cleaned off I wiped it with a cloth and most of it came loose. The drawst5ring is there and just the ends of the chin strap are still attached to the metal loops. The rivets have the pierced washers and have been there for years. This is a nice heavy combat helmet. Condition good +

ARMY M43 TROPICAL OFFICERS CAP
This M43 officers cap appears to be made in Italy because of the cloth and poor workmanship. This M43 cap has the officers Aluminum bullion along 90% of the top of the cap and it appears that they ran out at the rear end. The top section has a small piece of cloth added at the rear end of the cap to complete it. The machine woven Army green insignia is hand stitched to the cap and does not penetrate the olive green liner. There is no manufacturers stamp or size marking. The cap is tight on my 7 1/4 head. Direct veteran purchase. Condition very good+

DD ARMY TRANSSION HELMET SHELL
This is really an interesting helmet and came with the American helmet no. 9106. The shell was repainted a thick dark green and the decals were placed on the green paint. The outer shell retains about 60+% of the green paint and the inner shell was only painted up to the liner and retains 80+% of the green paint. The Army eagle decal is about at 90+% and the national shield is at 75% complete. The liner is missing completely but the original rivets are in place making for an easy restoration. This helmet and the other one listed were used to play war for many years, and purchased from the gentleman who wore it in play. Condition good+

This SE64 helmet batch 612 just came out of a old time collection. This is a heavy SE helmet the weight seems to instill security is a re-issued helmet with a heavy dark green paint on the outer shell. The paint would rate about 95% even with the scratches and dings. The army eagle decal would rate about 60%+ with the swaz complete. The inside shell retains the original issue paint and would rate about 95%. The liner fingers are mostly pulled apart, and the leather is dry. I would imagine that some one put it on their head and pulled the fingers apart. The original draw string is there. The chin strap is present but the final part of the strap that goes through the clip is missing but there is enough to catch the catch and display as the collector had. Overall a nice combat helmet. This heavy helmet just came out of a old time collection. This re-issued M35's outer shell is painted a dark green gray finish and retains about 85% of the paint. The marking for mfg. and size are painted over but I would assume it a size 64/66 shell. The inside shell retains about 80% of the paint. The golden color liner is complete with the original draw string and a name inked on it Fitztl?????. There is the remains of tape on the rear skirt that the collector has his price on it. ARMY OFFICERS ARTILLERY VISOR CAP
I just took this out of my collection, its been on the shelf since 1919 so my note says. This visor is a high quality item the shape is really nice and does not show in the photos because I was using a helmet stand and it distorts the visors. I just looked the visor over very good and there is one small small moth nip in the red piping in the front and its not visible unless you look for it. The eagle is silver washed the wreath and cockade are aluminum the officers shin strap is a late war one. The sweat diamond is long gone The stitching for the diamond is readily visible on the liner but not in the photo. The leather sweat band is oversized and has pulled away from part of the visor cap. There is tissue paper around the inside of the sweat band to make it smaller. Aside from the sweat band being detached from part of the visor its a great cap. Condition very good +

Bread Bag Camo M42 SD Army Camo Helmet
Well, this is actually the first time I have believed a bred bag strap as being period applied on a helmet. I do think the helmet was used in a place that it did not see much action but. From what I see, I see a lot of evidence to support the strap was there forever! As I was just looking at it I found another sign that I really enjoyed discovering. The strap is not super tight against the decal. Looking at the back side of the strap, I can see traces of the decal on the strap where they rubbed against each other. All over, there is a lot of evidence of this strap having been there for 70 years or so. Anyway, then as you would expect the strap has protected the decal well over the years so it rates very strong in condition. The paint and exterior are nice in condition. The shell is an ET64 with a batch number 2100 on the back apron. The liner shows some wear so it did receive some use, I guess the former owner either died to lose the helmet or it received little use. I guess you can ponder that question! I had better mention, one person who I respect feels the bread bags were post war added, I do not agree. However, the price of this helmet is for the super conditioned SD Army M42, it is a top shelf helmet. The straps are free so you can decide whether they were period added or not. |

This SD Army helmet just recently came out of an old collection and is made by Q size 62 batch number T472. The Army decal would rate a 90%+ with minor loss to the lower arm of the swaz and a few scratches thru it. The outside of the shell retains over 85%+ of the original paint. There are the usual dings and scratches in the finish. The interior retains all the paint, the liner is original to the helmet and the leather is well used. The tie cord is present and the chin strap is complete but has torn apart from the buckle side. The strap is factory stamped and dated 1942. A nice combat helmet. Condition very good

This cap just came off my display shelf tag says I purchased this visor in 1982 so it time to go. Looking over the visor there are two small moth holes on the front of the visor and some minor moth paths. The luft eagle has lost its frosting the cockade is aluminum and in good condition. The patent leather chin strap and brim are in fine condition. The leather sweat band is complete and marked I Abrt.Flak.-Rgt. 5 then 14 Battr and a 10 Battr. The sweat diamond is maker marked BMF. LUFT EM SIGNALS VISOR CAP
This is an enlisted man's signal visor cap I purchased over 30 years ago from a vet, it is in very good condition just needs to be blocked out to get its shape back. The cap is made of the standard Luft blue-gray Tricot wool cloth and has a sharp peak, the steel cap spring is still present. The eagle and wreath both have sharp detail and still look like new. The reddish brown piping is perfect except for a small moth nip in the front of course , but it is only about 1/8" long and not overly noticeable. The interior of the cap is in very good shape. The sweat band has a cut through the band in the front , don't know why someone did that, and is marked with the distribution point LDLNS on the back side. The cap is maker marked by Delix Weissback dated 1938. The diamond sweat shield is there, over all a better than average cap from an early manufacture date. Condition very good +

Uber Rare M40 DD Luftwaffe Helmet
This helmet was vet purchased by my buddy Bob a year or so ago. It is as real as they get and I really doubt you will have a chance to get another. This is a well used but still very collectable helmet, "used but not too abused"! Anyway, the exterior paint is very strong and does have a little patina over it. The Adler is nearly perfect with only the most minor signs of wear to it, it does show some age though. The national shield is about 80% complete and is so real you can almost place your self at a Flak gun! The shell is an ET62 with the batch number 915. I am tempted to look it up in Brian Ice's excellent book and I probably will before I put her in storage. The liner is well used and could use a draw string. It is pretty soft and strong but I would not stress it too much.

Overall this is a really nice helmet with a lot of character, It is a large size and overall in wonderful condition! The Adler is in 90% or so condition and as you would expect, the paint is "bout" the same. There are a couple of very faint spots of red paint on the exterior that do not show too well, they could be easily removed if you desired. On the interior the liner is gone although the liner band and rivets are still there so it displays very well! It is a large ET66 shell with the batch number 1770.

Unissued Near Consecutively Numbered Luftwaffe Helmet
This one is a NS62 with the batch number "D265. The shell is nearly new and only shows very minor signs of age and wear. The decal has one scrape and is still in the same condition as the exterior paint. It looks like it had gotten wet at one point in time so on the interior there is a rust spot and one of the tongues is damaged. Otherwise the interior is just as nice as the exterior. DD SS Helmet
Nice DD SS helmet which is a Q 68! The batch number is stamped on the rear apron and is 4803. The exterior paint is really nice just showing minor signs of age and wear. The Q decal is exceptionally nice and rates around 90% or so. The national shield is pretty good but has most of the white disc absent. What I do see of the white disc is not a bright white in color. I say this because I originally though the national shield was uncovered but now I do not think it was. I say this because when a decal is "dug up" it is very clean or in this case would be white. This shows patina and oxidation over the decades. The interior is just as clean as the interior, this liner shows very minor signs of age and wear. I am sure this helmet spent most of its time in a closet before and after the war. It is complete with a chin strap which is broken.

This is a very cool helmet and I know the last two former owners of the helmet. The last had purchased it out of Russia many years ago, I wish it could speak. I have wanted to own this helmet for a long time since it is simply “cool”! The runic decal is over the former party shield and has wear in the right places. I like the runes to be intact; I don’t like it when the runes are distorted! The other side bears a police eagle under the new party shield; it has worn in a really neat way! This rest of the helmet shows age and wear but is typical of a combat worn piece. The liner was out at one point although I am sure it was period done. This is an awesome helmet! |

FIRE POLICE HELMET DD WITH COMB
This has been sitting on one of my shelves for over 25 years just never got back to it. I purchased this at a coin shop in town along with a ton of shoulder board metal insignia and other badges. Any ways this helmet is complete with a lot of wear to it. This is the typical light weight double vent areas each side with the square off front dip in the helmet shell. The police eagle is about 95% complete and only has two breaks in the outer border. The national shield has about 90% of the decal and with just two flaws in the red background. The comb is dented from use and the cord liner between the comb and helmet dome is fair shape but complete. Usually this spacer cord is missing on most helmets. The black exterior paint would rate about 75 to 80%. The liner is there but the leather tongs have pulled apart and show old repairs to them where the cord goes through. The chin strap is complete but shows age with cracks and dry rot, not serviceable but there. The nuts holding the comb on even have the proper fiber washers under the nuts. A textbook complete example that has seen better days. Condition fair to good

This is a super cool helmet I owned years ago and the owner now would like to move it along. He will make an outright sale or consider trades. The runic decal is in wonderful condition and rates in the mid 90% range. This decal has a dark patina to it which I think is because of the bees-wax based wax they used during the period meaning this was a parade helmet. There was also an ET decal added over an ET decal. The party shield was also applied over another shield during the period and rates near perfect. The shell is stamped ET66 which is of no surprise to most of us SS helmet nuts! The leather is in used but not abused condition and has the remnants of the tie string still present. This is a wonderful helmet in fine condition that would be very difficult to upgrade! This helmet comes with a Kelly Hicks COA. SALE OR TRADE |

SS VISOR CAP SKULL | ||||
I have had this skull for a number of years waiting for the right trade item, but I never had put it on the list so here it is. I am offering the skull for trade towards American medal groups from WWI and earlier as this what I collect now. The skull has a pleasing silver finish and is marked RZM 499/41 and has a copper finish reverse. The prongs are present along with some of that verdigris on them. Of course I will always accept cash offers and who knows if good enough I will sell it. Condition very good+

Huge Combat Worn DD SS Helmet
I guess this is the update of combat used helmets! This tub has about 75% of the runic decal present. The party shield on the other hand is about 95% present. On the runic shield it looks like the helmet took a hit above the runic shield which may have been a cause of the loss of decal we have. I would rate the exterior paint on the strong side, in the 90+ percent range or so. I kept this helmet for some time but it is now time to move it on. On the interior we have a nice conditioned double banded aluminum liner band housing used but presentable leather. One of the tongues is broke but still attached by the tie string. It is a huge ET 68 with the batch number 0342. |

Tombac SS Skull Change Purse
A friend of mine purchased from the vet a few weeks ago a grouping which also had this purse in it. I have enclosed a picture of the entire grouping he bought too. The purse is made of the late war "erstatz" pressed paper so I am sure this was done by the former SS member who owned it. The skull is the early type made by tombac, you can tell it has been here forever so I really did not want to remove it for that reason. When it was set they placed red felt behind his eyes, it looks awesome!

Waffen SS Officers Visor
Here is an absolutely gorgeous SS Officers visor, I was lucky to be able to pick it up not too long ago. The exterior is in super fine condition. The field gray exterior made out of a wool tricot material has no obvious mothing or real wear. I am sure if you look hard enough you will find something but I have not yet. The top of the hat by the peak does have a small rip that was repaired. I know there are people who can do a much better job repairing it if you so desire. The insignia is absolutely original to the visor which is something you never see! They are made of aluminum and I doubt they have ever been off the hat. The pins on these break if bent too much, I think twice may be too much! So, that is great to find since most SS guys removed their insignia after the war to help prevent prosecution, humiliation or harm tot hem or their families. That is why very few waffen SS uniforms are found with their original insignia. Anyway, the interior shows minor signs of age and wear, this was a worn visor that has not been too used or abused. Most of the cellion sweat shield is gone but some is there. The gray leather sweat band does have "Extra" stamped into the side of it. So, we know this is a nice high quality visor most likely made by Erel. Killer visor!

POLICE SHAKO EAGLE AND POMP POM
The eagle and wreath is in exceptional condition with sharp features, the back threaded studs are present along with one nut. The pomp has a name scratched into the back side. The front has all the paint and shows some wear. I bought this set last year direct from a vet with a pile of items. He had it glued to a black board for display. I will send a copy of the items I purchased from him. Condition very good

Vaulted SS Visor Eagle Marked M1/167
This eagle just came in on a hotel buy with some fabulous medals. It was vaulted by the former owner and has the pins still intact. The finish is wonderful, not perfect but close to it!

Police Helmet | ||||
This example is an honest used example. Each decal rates in the 90% range and matches the black painted background pretty well. The aluminum comb also matches nicely, it was obviously used and has minor scuffs here and there but a great starter piece. Oh, there is one rivet missing in the back I had better mention. The liner is there and in average condition, slightly dry but still very usable. The chin strap is also there and very usable. The back skirt is marked "99" in white paint which is probably an accountability number of some sort. Not a bad helmet and has a fair price in todays market.

Pea Green M35 DD Field Police Helmet
If you want a top notch M35 DD FP helmet, this is it! The paint is amazing and only shows the most minor signs of age and wear. there are some small scratches here and there but nothing of consequence. The Adler rates about 94%, there is a scratch close to the swastika but it missed and still looks great! The party shield is also in wonderful condition and more along the lines of 97% or so. The liner shows light use and has a unique stamp on it, I think I have seen it before but it is very rare. We also have a nice chin strap attached to the helmet, nice, untouched, original helmet in wonderful condition!

M40 DD Field Police Helmet
My God, the helmet market has been on fire for years now. I am sure I have mentioned before how helmet collecting was the “bottom of the barrel” years ago, now we are the “Top Dogs”! Anyway, this is an extremely nice “Been there done that” helmet. It has legitimate age and wear but not abuse. The party shield is nearly perfect and the Adler is probably 90% or so which matches the condition of the paint. The shell is an ET64 with the batch number “1081”. There is a nice used chin strap attached to it and the liner matches being nicely stained and used but still in strong condition. Nice helmet! |

MONTE OLIVIA SHIPS TALLY
This Donald duck cap tally is for the hospital ship Monte Olivia. The information I have is that it was a hospital ship commissioned in April 4th 1925 and destroyed by British aircraft on April 3rd 1945. This tally has the German national flag black white and red plus a flag with SHDG on it. Direct veteran purchase. Condition shortened but good+

GERMAN NAVY CAP TALLY SMS OSTFRIESLAND
This WWI Navy tally has a tremendous amount of history to it. This battleship was of the Helgoland Class launched in 1909 accepted in the German Navy 1911. This battleship participated in all major fleet operations in WWI including the battle of Jutland. In November of 1918 it was interned in Scapa Flow and was transferred to the US Navy. She was sunk during Air Power Trials in July of 1921. So this ship has lost of history with Germany Great Britain and the US. Unfortunately this is only 2/3 of the tally the left side of the ships name is gone. Condition good ++

Very nice conditioned hat in nearly new condition. It is extremely large in size and marked inside. The markings have faded and you need to hold it in the proper light to make out. Super hat! |

NEW ITEM KM Captains Visor
This is an absolutely visor that was originally sold by Bill Shea to a friend of mine. My friends collecting interest have changed to he asked me to sell it for him. If I had the extra money I would keep it, it is a work of art! The bullion eagle and wreath are gorgeous examples of hand embroidery. They look wonderful next to the "scrambled eggs" on the visor. Besides some slight signs of age and wear I can't find any real damage or abuse to report about the hat. It was worn and shows minor signs of that which we like to see but nothing nasty. There is an initial attached to the sweatband which might help determine who the original owner was, maybe. I guess it would be a long shot, but you never know!

CHILDS DD ARMY HELMET | ||||
It has been a while since I have owned one of these. This example has seen lots of rough use and it shows it. The saving grace is that the army eagle decal is almost 100% complete with the national colors at a good 94% complete. The liner has been long gone from the helmet but the vent caps are still present. The helmet has a lot of rust spots that could be reduced for better display. All in all it is what it is. Condition good (because of the decals)

POSTAL SIDE CAP | ||||
I have had this cap for years tucked away always thought it was a Navy side cap until a good friend found it and pointed out the eagle was not a Navy one. So you learn something every day sometime so the moral is take a close look at what you have. Anyways this side cap has some moth nips on the red piping they left the rest of the wool cap alone? The eagle and roundel is hand stitched to the cap and marked with a size 56 stamped inside. A hard to find side cap that needs a new home. Condition good ++

JAPANESE TYPE 90 HELMET
This civilian helmet is in very good condition with writing on the exterior. The liner is a little different from the typical civilian helmet and has the full length cloth tie strips to secure the helmet on your head. There is some kind of writing on the front of the helmet but I question if it is really done by a Japanese person. To me it looks like a shipboard embellishment? Anyways a nice sound helmet with the flared out edges and lighter weight. This helmet came with flag (2186) Vet family purchase. Condition Very Good

WWI HELMET HIGH VISOR BATTLE DAMAGE SHELL
This shell is marked C or G 62 but appears to be correct as it has the stepped vents. The helmet size was stuck so hard on the skirt that it is visible on the outside of the shell. There are two bullet holes going thru the top of the shell from the inside out. The shell has a dark finish through out. On the left side hand written in yellow paint is the following "We fix imports too" kind of cute must have been in an auto shop. Condition Good+

RLB Civil WWI Type Helmet
Here is a super rare variant helmet you will probably never see again. I have seen and owned many German helmets over the years but never seen or owned one like this so I am sure it is really rare. It has a green paint on the interior and exterior with a nice RLB starburst decal on the front of the helmet. The decal rates around 90% condition, the paint on the body is a bit less. We have a vent on each side of the helmet with a screen for ventilation. The liner is a three pad type and in fine condition, it also has the chin strap present and complete. The name of the former owner is written on the first pad, it reads "Ranerberger".
